Surat Untuk Tuhan

This series of works was created together with the Kali Oyo Simulation work, when I participated in an artist residency at Bumi Pemuda Rahayu Yogyakarta. BPR is located in Muntuk village, which is adjacent to the Mangunan pine forest. In 2014, the road that passed through the Mangunan pine forest still had very few road markers or barriers. Something else was in the pine forest landscape, artificial colors in the expanse of nature that conquered. The interest of the Muntuk village community in color is very visible from how the houses look very striking, contrasting colors and colliding with each other. This is what then triggered me to apply the variety of colors into the medium of the giring stone which functionally exists as a marker for the “other” road. The experience of living in Muntuk village, gave the impression that the people who live there are very religious, there is even someone who said ‘here 100 percent Muslim’, it is also seen when it is time for the five daily prayers, the surrounding mosque is never empty of visitors. Then I took the initiative to invite children who often play in the residency area, to participate in this work. I asked them to write their personal prayers and hopes on the prepared giring stones. As part of the writing ritual, I asked the children to pray first before writing anything. The stones that had been written and colored like the color of the residents’ houses were then installed at the intersections of the road along the Mangunan pine forest route.
